We are Sly & José. Who is La Llorona? We chose this topic because it connects to the South Platte River, and because La Llorana is a Mexican legend. The Rio Grande flows from the Gulf of Mexico to Brownsville, Texas. That is 1,250 miles long. The Rio Grande also can end in Colorado. When I look at the South Platte River, it reminds me of the Rio Grande. So here is the story...
It begins on the border of Mexico and the U.S. There was once a woman named Maria and she fell in love with a guy and he loved her. But the guy did not want a family. Maria had twins already. She went to the Rio Grande and drowned her kids. Then she went to her room and yelled, “We can get married now!” to her boyfriend. He opened the door of the room and he saw blood on her dress, yelled, slammed the door, and ran away. She was so sad and upset, and realized what she had done to her kids, she went to the Rio Grande, and drowned. There are many stories based on this legend.
I’m José, and I’m Sly, and this is our community.
