My family has a lot of stories, of all the stories my favorite is my grandpa’s visit to the Oxford Hotel. Here’s how the story goes -
My grandpa’s visit was more trouble than he could imagine. He was trying to get a room at the Oxford without knowing any English, so they had to find a translator. It took a while to find someone who spoke Spanish back then, but they found someone and my grandpa had a great time at this historic hotel.
The Oxford Hotel was built in 1891. This was right after Denver was rated the third largest city in the west. One of their attractions was the “vertical railway” or as we know it, the elevator. The person who designed the Oxford Hotel was Frank E. Edbrooke. He designed the Oxford Hotel a year before he designed the Brown Palace, making the Oxford Hotel the oldest hotel in Denver that is still operating.
The Oxford Hotel is an important part of my family’s history. It is My Community, My Colorado.
